Middle school AP training

Middle School Training for AP Spanish
presenter: Josefina Davis

Preparing students for success on the AP exam can be challenging. The test was designed to give college credit to high school students at the end of their secondary course of study.
Students who are successful at rigorous AP coursework will often be encouraged to take other challenging coursework in high school, and are much more likely to attend and complete college.

Middle school teachers face challenges that teachers of high school juniors and seniors do not: younger students simply have not had the coursework to prepare them to confront some of the themes of the AP with confidence.

The middle school teacher will need to provide the necessary cultural and linguistic framework that will allow his/her learners to be successful. This may require designing lessons that address these core concepts as well as developing the linguistic skills to respond to the AP exam's demands.

Challenge: What activities and discussions and resources in class might allow you to engage learners on these topis in class?

The best starting point is on the mother ship: AP Central!
This page includes modules to guide you on the different sections of the AP exam. As you discover each section think of the resources you have available to you (district resources (text and online), your own and resources on line) that might be useful in planning your lessons.

Here are files that Ms Davis wanted you to have access to:

Today's agenda is here.

The Powerpoint Ms. Davis is using today is here. (pdf format here)

The AP Spanish language and culture exam guide

A sample lesson plan: El agua es vida

McFarland USA: a video clip in Spanish that describes the film and its signification. Which AP themes would this clip include?

Culture videos for Spanish: http://www.coerll.utexas.edu/spintx/ videos for teaching/discussing culture etc with native speakers or advanced students.

This is the containing folder: what participants do today can be uploaded to it so all will have access! :)
