  • In order to encourage students to read at all levels we are currently looking to create a 'library' of resources to encourage students to explore on their own. To be able to process and understand what they are reading it's necessary to provide reading possibilities that are on or close to the reading ability of the learner: this can be tricky but once a learner has had some success reading they are much more likely to read independently.

  1. I teach K -5 students. I only see them 45 min. once or twice each week. I encourage them to reading from the beginning. Well, Chinese Characters takes years to master. I started with PINYIN and simple rhymes. I use preK pictures books and type over with white type I can write the Chinese words and PINYIN. I model reading to them in class and put the books in the book box for them to read on their own when we have small group activity times once a while. I use online books a lot, their are lots of prek reading books. I like Eric Carle's book a lot. It's translated in many languages...the students are familiar with the stories and they are real books the Chinese Children read.
Couple years ago I attended a Chinese Language Conference, a professor from Hawaii shared an activity she used with her college students. She asked them to create their own story book. Authentic reading materials for beginner levels are so hard to find, she asked her students to write their own book using the vocabularies they learnt in class. To her surprise, they want to tell their story so much that they found more words and more complicated phrases to finish their project.
I borrowed her idea...to use with my 5th graders last couple of years. It used to have a hard time creating and saving a powerpoint project. This year each student have their own google account and they can share, save and keep (own) their own creation in Chinese. I usually start the project right after Spring Break before the STARR test and before the 5th graders getting "wild".
They begin with creating their own authentic Chinese Seal with their authentic translation(thanks to technology). They always end up creating more pages than I asked for. It's just a simple reading book starting with a simple phrase "I like to...." and they add the vocabulary of the topic I asked them to study...on their own..."yes" ....on their own. OF course, my instruction clearly given them the links to the sites I want them to go to and learn (this can accommodate different learning style and learning pace) they can repeat as many times as they can. If anyone said they finish reading all of the links, I will ask them to tell me how to say ".." in Chinese...then they will know that they have to go back and re-read the lesson (most links no longer than 5 min., lessons, explanations, real live situations ....songs..etc., flash cards...etc.)
I will share the lesson plan and finish projects they did these couple of years. They are all excited they can get control of what they do. They are excited to share in class and read their books in Chinese ....especially this year they all want to tell they like to play with the Fidget Spinner (I did not teach them in class...they google it...haha but of course there is no direct translation yet, and I have to change it to the right way to say it...but thanks to technology....I can do feedback right the way in the google slide they sent to me.)
